Ravenscourt

Artwork By Aislynn Hearn

Dr Kennedy is a guilt-ridden psychiatrist, who is reviewing old recordings of his former patient Alisha in the hopes of solving the mystery of Ravenscourt. At the time he easily dismissed Alisha’s assertion that Ravenscourt was bound to evil. However many years later, his faith in that assertion and even reality itself, is starting to crumble.

Because somehow the deserted asylum has started calling to him in his dreams….

St Anne’s Asylum in Cork City

“Ravenscourt” is a gothic horror influenced ghost story about a psychiatrist who is haunted by past mistakes, the patient he failed and the place he now believes may have played a role in all of it. The story is inspired by St Anne’s Asylum in Cork City. The now derelict building was built in the 1850s and the “corridor asylum” is said to be one of the longest buildings in Europe.

This ongoing Lovecraftian tale, written by David Horgan is brought to life by thespian actor Mark D’Aughton and Irene Kelleher (Game of Thrones). With special thanks to Sean MacGearailt for the introduction and credits. Produced and edited by Epic Productions and proudly distributed by Cornucopia Radio.

Ravenscourt Volume II: Part 1

“When God really wants to punish you, it grants your wishes”

Lily’s dream was to work at Ravenscourt. Her brother Tim’s only wish is to find his sister. Lily has been missing for over a year. Is the diary which Lily writes in on a rainy night while working at the Ravenscourt institute, a record of her sanity unravelling? Or the chronicle of her transformation into something more dreadful?

None of us really changes over time. We only become more fully what we are” – Anne Rice

Chapter One: A Fragile Layer of Sanity

Perhaps you could be forgiven for thinking that the trees that surround Ravenscourt are there to hide its modesty. A privacy afforded to its vulnerable patients and selfless staff. However a darker reading could be that mother nature herself is trying to swallow this evil building from view. Trying to protect us; her naïve inhabitants. The same way a parent covers their child’s eyes when disturbing images appear on the television in front of them.

But the horrors that lay in the Ravenscourt mental health facility aren’t secured behind a television screen. Instead they are only held back from our reality by a fragile layer of sanity, and a story which began with a young woman…

Chapter Two: Death’s Door

Those who remember Ravenscourt can’t bare to speak its name, yet somehow they also can’t seem to forgive themselves enough to forget it…

This is because I have received a letter from what I believe to be a delusional voice in the head of my former patient, Alicia. It refers to itself as ‘Boda’. The name of child would give to an imaginary friend or a pet. But I believe this creature walks on two legs. And is far more human than I once believed…

Chapter Three: A Twist of Fate

In the first half of my life I accumulated many things. An education, money, a career, a partner, a place to call home, but in the last half of my life most of these things have slipped away. I know that some losses will always happen, however there are still things I refuse to accept; such as lies and the destruction of innocence.

My colleagues say it’s unethical to share these sessions with you. But in my heart I know Alisha would want her story to be heard. She was so desperate for anyone to believe her. I didn’t at the time and now in a twist of fate, she’s the only person who can lend credence to this story…

Chapter Four: Physician Heal Thyself

In my recovery I practiced mindfulness. Unfortunately it was not popular at the time I was seeing patients. I truly believe it would have been immeasurably helpful to them, some of them. The best description I’ve heard of it is that your thoughts are like a waterfall and the goal is to find a space behind the waterfall: We are not our thoughts.

Of course this does remind me of Alicia’s assertion that Boda existed in ‘the shadow behind the mirror’. A kind of dark mindfulness. A malevolent consciousness that exists behind our perceptions of reality.

There is more to this world then what is reflected back to us and I must now return back to Ravenscourt.
